Rock Your Body: Apple

"Say goodbye to your inner critic, and take this pledge to be  kinder to yourself and others. This is a call to arms. A call to be gentle, to be forgiving, to be generous with yourself. " - Oprah Winfrey

The "apple" body type is characterized by:
Rounder shoulder line
- A flattish bottom
- Average to big bust
- Fullness around the middle
- Lean legs

If your body resembles an apple, your pretty proportionate. You just tend to carry your weight in your middle, which gives you a more undefined waist. This body shape can be one of the most difficult to dress, but just you wait. Once you learn how to accent your fabulous legs and great upper body with the right clothes you'll be ready to face the world! Other fabulous apples such as yourself include the above mentioned Oprah Winfrey, Catherine Zeta Jones, Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, and Jessica Simpson.

Dressing Your Body Type
Apples should choose clothes that flatter your middle by not adding volume. Adding details and emphasis to your top and bottom 1/3 is key in accentuate your best features. Doing these two things will help create the illusion of an hourglass figure.

PANTS
If your an apple picking a new pair of pants, classic bootcut is your best bet. (You may have noticed this by now, but bootcut pants look great on pretty much everyone!) Pants like this will streamline your thighs and help balance you out. Dark wash jeans will be the most flattering for you. Look for high pockets that will make your behind look a little perkier. Vertical creases on the front of your jeans will also help elongate your legs. Choose jeans with a little bit of stretch in order to streamline everything and add comfort. ALWAYS avoid jeans with pleats and high waisted pants as they tend to do your body no favors.

SKIRTS
Have fun with the hemline of your skirts by opting for asymmetrical or other interesting cuts. The wider the hemline at the knee, the smaller your waist will look in comparison. Choose skirts that are knee or calf length and hit a little below the waist. Skirts shorter then this will make your body look blocky. Choose simpler skirts over tiered or ruffled options, but don't be afraid of print or color because it can help camouflage the tummy area. Keep it simple around the waistline by avoiding loops, buckles, and belts and go for a flat waistband instead.

TOPS
As a general rule, keep detailing above the bust line. Go for embellished low neckline or a nice v-neck. Wider necklines such as scoops, squares, and sweetheart also flatter an apple body type. Empire waist, wrap neck top, and tunic tops that have a band at the narrowest part of the body look great on you because they very slightly float away from your middle. Also, go for finer fabrics that follow the body without adding extra bulk. Play up your shoulder by adding extra volume there and in your sleeves. Prints can work wonders because, again, they help distract and camouflage the tummy area. Normally you want to avoid adding the volume that comes with detailing below the bustline, but waterfall tops are great because they actually streamline your silhouette.

DRESSES
If you’re an apple go for dresses that highlight your bust and skim down over your tummy without clinging. Wrap dresses are practically PERFECT for you: an A-shaped skirt, open low neckline, and flattering around the middle. Identifying those three components is key to finding a dress that flatters your body type Flouncy fabric, clingy jersey dresses, and shapeless sacks won't do your body any favors whereas a nice, flared maxi dress will. Again, don't go with any hemlines higher then knee length and avoid belts, bows, and other waistline details that hit the middle and center of your tummy area.

ACCESSORIES
Apple shapes can go all out with their accessories. Get yourself some statement pieces of jewelry whether that be a chunky necklaces or dangly earrings. The only detail to really stay clear of are accessories around the waist such as chunky, buckled belts. Don't forget about the most important statement accessories: shoes! Go for fun heels, wedges, and flats to make your feet look oh so feminine. Also, choose your jackets carefully. You don't want to get anything too bulky, but rather things that follow the body. A cropped, light jacket looks great over a dress with a defined waist. Likewise  longer jackets and single-button blazers that hit right under the bust flatter you in the best way possible. Make sure to wear your jackets open whenever weather allows because it slims your body. Grab yourself a long shoulder bag strap bag (none of those chunky shoulder bags) and your fashionable self will know you are completely rockin it!
