On Beauty

Have you ever noticed how incredibly beautiful these women are? I remember going to girls camp when I was 12 or 13. Sister Dalton was the Young Woman’s president at the time, and she came to visit us at camp. I recall sitting there, listening to her speak, and feeling the most peaceful, sweet spirit wash over me. I thought I had never seen anyone more beautiful and right then, I felt beautiful too. How I wish I had carried that moment with me through years of shattered self-esteem, distorted body image, and eating disorder. The journey to me has been long, but all because of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and His atonement, I have found the meaning of true beauty in the gospel.

I think of the quote from Harry Potter, at Bill and Fleur’s wedding (if you haven't read it, I'm very sorry). “Fleur was wearing a very simple white dress and seemed to be emitting a strong, silvery glow. While her radiance usually dimmed everyone else by comparison, today it beautified everybody it fell upon.” (credit) That’s what the gospel does. True beauty doesn’t take away, true beauty doesn’t hurt or tear others down. True beauty builds up. True beauty makes others feel beautiful. True beauty is what our relief society presidency sisters have. True beauty is light-true beauty gives light.

But tell us your thoughts. What do you think beauty is?
